British Man Laughed After Grooming Vulnerable 21-Year-Old Into Taking His Own Life During Video Call, Jailed

UK Man Jailed After Encouraging Vulnerable American to Take His Own Life During Discord Video Call.

A 21-year-old man from West Yorkshire has been sentenced to more than six years in prison after admitting to encouraging a vulnerable American man to take his own life during an online video call.

Prosecutors told the court that Dylan Phelan was part of a Discord group where members repeatedly targeted and pressured 21-year-old Travis Dyer, who lived in Louisiana, urging him to harm himself during an ongoing period of emotional distress.

During a video call, Phelan allegedly encouraged Dyer to pull the trigger and was later reported to have laughed after the incident. Authorities described the behaviour as part of a sustained pattern of online manipulation and cruelty within the group.

The court heard that Travis Dyer had been struggling with severe emotional vulnerability following multiple family tragedies, making him especially susceptible to harmful influence from others online.

Phelan was later arrested in the United Kingdom and charged with encouraging suicide, along with possession of indecent material. He pleaded guilty to the offences and was sentenced to six years and four months in prison.

In delivering the sentence, the judge condemned his actions, describing them as a “campaign of cruelty” and stating that he had shown a “lack of respect for life.”

The case has raised serious concerns about the dangers of online platforms where vulnerable individuals can be targeted, with authorities calling for stronger enforcement against communities that promote or encourage self-harm.
