Former British Airways Pilot Kwame Yeboah Sentenced to More Than Eight Years in Prison in Online Grooming and Child Abuse Case

 

A former British Airways pilot and ex-England youth basketball player has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison after being convicted in a case involving the grooming and abuse of a young girl he met online.

How the Investigation Began

According to prosecutors, Kwame Yeboah, 30, first came into contact with the victim through the now-defunct video-chat platform Omegle. Their conversations later moved to Instagram, where the pair continued exchanging messages and speaking regularly through calls.

Investigators said Yeboah gradually built an online relationship with the girl before arranging to meet her in person.

The case came to the attention of authorities after the girl's mother learned from one of her daughter's friends that she had been communicating with an adult man online. Concerned about what she had discovered, the mother contacted police, leading to an investigation.

Court Proceedings

Prosecutors described Yeboah as a dangerous sexual predator who travelled approximately 200 miles to meet the young girl. Evidence presented in court showed that he checked into a hotel before carrying out offences that later led to his conviction.

Yeboah admitted to several serious sexual offences, including multiple counts of rape and assault by penetration.

Appearing before the court via video link from prison, he was sentenced to eight years and four months in custody. In addition to his prison term, he will also remain on licence for a further year after his release.

Career Ends Following Conviction

British Airways reportedly dismissed Yeboah shortly after the airline became aware of the criminal case and the allegations against him.

Before his conviction, Yeboah had also represented England at youth basketball level, making the case particularly shocking due to his previous professional achievements.

The case has renewed concerns about online grooming and the risks children face when interacting with strangers on social media and video-chat platforms.

Child protection experts continue to urge parents and guardians to maintain open conversations with children about internet safety, monitor online activity when appropriate, and encourage young people to report suspicious or inappropriate interactions.

Authorities also remind parents to remain alert to sudden changes in online behaviour and to seek help if they suspect a child may be at risk.
