Missing British Teen Found in Ecuador With Man Wanted by Interpol as Human Trafficking Probe Begins

 Quito, Ecuador – A 16-year-old British teenager who had been reported missing in the United Kingdom has been found safe in Ecuador following an international rescue operation involving Ecuadorian authorities, Interpol, and anti-trafficking organization Our Rescue.

The teenager was located in the northern Ecuadorian province of Imbabura, approximately 70 miles northeast of the capital city of Quito, after investigators traced her movements into the South American nation.

According to Ecuador's National Police, the girl had been listed under an Interpol Yellow Notice, an international alert used to help locate missing persons, particularly minors and vulnerable individuals.

Found With Man Subject to Interpol Notice

Authorities said the teenager was discovered in the company of a man with dual Ecuadorian and American nationality who was himself the subject of an international Interpol notice. Officials have not publicly disclosed the nature of that notice or the man's identity due to the ongoing investigation.

Police emphasized that, at this stage, investigators are examining whether the teenager may have been a victim of human trafficking or exploitation, but no formal conclusions have yet been announced.

"As soon as the teenager was located, protection protocols were immediately activated due to concerns regarding her vulnerability and possible links to the crime of human trafficking," Ecuador's National Police said in a statement.

The operation, known as "Cero Impunidad 19257" (Zero Impunity 19257), was carried out on June 15 by Ecuador's specialized police unit responsible for investigating crimes involving violence against women, children, human trafficking, and migrant smuggling.

Representatives from the British Embassy in Ecuador also assisted in coordinating the rescue efforts.

Teen Taken to Specialist Shelter

Following her rescue, the teenager was transported to a specialist care facility in Quito, where she is receiving protection, medical assistance, and psychological support while authorities continue their investigation.

Officials are also working to determine:

  • How and when the teenager entered Ecuador;
  • Whether she traveled voluntarily or under coercion;
  • Whether additional individuals may have been involved;
  • And what circumstances led to her disappearance from the United Kingdom.

Investigators reportedly recovered a mobile phone during the operation, which could provide further clues about the case.

Growing Concerns Over Child Exploitation

The case has once again highlighted growing international concerns about the vulnerability of teenagers to trafficking networks and online exploitation.

According to Ecuadorian authorities, thousands of children and teenagers have been reported missing in the country in recent years. Security experts warn that criminal organizations increasingly target adolescents through social media, false job offers, romantic relationships, and promises of travel opportunities.

Glaeldys González Calanche, an analyst with the International Crisis Group, previously warned that teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are especially vulnerable because criminal groups often seek to recruit or exploit them for various illegal activities.

International Cooperation Praised

Authorities praised the cooperation between international agencies, saying the successful rescue demonstrates the importance of cross-border collaboration in locating missing children and combating human trafficking.

The teenager's identity has not been released because she is a minor, and officials have urged the public and media to respect her privacy as she recovers from the ordeal.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities in both Ecuador and the United Kingdom are expected to continue working together to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
