The project is being launched by Realbotix Corp., which has developed its M-Series humanoid robot to interact directly with students.

Personalized Learning Inside and Outside School

According to the company, Optio functions both as an in-class teaching assistant and an at-home tutor.

The system uses AI avatars trained on the school's own curriculum to provide:

  • Homework assistance
  • Personalized tutoring
  • Lesson reinforcement
  • Multilingual support
  • Curriculum-specific guidance

Students can continue using the platform outside school hours to reinforce what they learn in class.

Pilot Program Begins in New York

The first deployment is taking place at Salamanca City Central School District, located on the Seneca Nation Reservation in New York.

Initially, the technology will be introduced to high school students enrolled in AI and robotics courses through the Woz ED STEM Pathway program, founded by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

School officials expect the program to expand to approximately 500 secondary school students later this year if the pilot proves successful.

School Officials Say AI Will Support—Not Replace—Teachers

District Superintendent Dr. Mark Beehler emphasized that the technology is designed to enhance education rather than replace educators.

According to Beehler, schools have struggled with the rapid growth of AI and concerns about student misuse. By working directly with Realbotix, the district hopes to provide students with a safe, curriculum-based AI learning assistant while giving teachers additional planning and instructional tools.

Built-In Safety Features

Realbotix says the platform includes several safeguards designed specifically for classroom use.

These include:

  • Operating under school supervision
  • Following the district's curriculum

The company says teachers remain fully in control of classroom instruction.

Realbotix describes the Salamanca deployment as the first step toward bringing AI-powered educational assistants into schools across the United States.

During the pilot, researchers will evaluate:
