British Man Charged in Australia After Police Allege Child Was Injured During Restaurant Refund Attempt
A British man has been charged in Australia after police alleged he deliberately injured his one-year-old child during a visit to a well-known Sydney restaurant in an attempt to fraudulently obtain a refund for the family's meal.
The 24-year-old, whose identity has not been released to protect the identity and welfare of the child, appeared before investigators after an incident that allegedly occurred on June 21 at Mr Wong, a popular Cantonese restaurant in central Sydney.
Authorities have emphasized that the allegations remain before the court, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Police Investigation Began After Restaurant Staff Reviewed CCTV
According to investigators, the incident initially appeared to be an accident.
Police allege the man complained that a high chair provided by the restaurant had injured his one-year-old daughter and requested compensation for the family's meal.
Restaurant staff reportedly refunded the approximately £50 (around AU$100) bill after the complaint.
However, after the family left the restaurant, employees reviewed security camera footage and became concerned about what they believed they had witnessed.
The restaurant then contacted New South Wales Police, who launched a formal investigation.

Allegations Presented by Police
According to a statement released by police, investigators allege the man removed a screw from the child's high chair and deliberately pressed it against the child's leg, causing the child to cry.
Authorities allege the injury was then falsely attributed to a defective high chair in order to obtain a financial benefit through deception.
Police later arrested the suspect at a caravan park in Narrabeen, located on Sydney's Northern Beaches.
Charges Filed
Following the investigation, the man was charged with:
- Domestic violence-related assault.
- Dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception.
Police allege both offences arose from the same incident at the restaurant.
The accused was later granted bail and is scheduled to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on July 15.
Restaurant Declines Public Comment
Representatives for Mr Wong declined to comment publicly on the ongoing legal proceedings.
The restaurant has continued normal operations while the matter proceeds through the Australian court system.
